JONATHAN COHEN

Jonathan Cohen earned his B.A. in Spanish from Indiana University in 2002 and his Juris Doctor from DePaul University in 2006. He worked as a law clerk for Marvin A. Brustin, Ltd. (May 2005-August 2005) and for the Cook County Office of the Public Defender (September 2005-December 2005). From November 2006 to January 2007, he was as an associate attorney with Hamblet Oremus & Little. He has been an associate attorney for Shestokas, Raines and Malavia, P.C. since January 2007.
Mr. Cohen has performed legal research for commercial, constitutional, criminal, and personal injury issues. He has also drafted briefs (involving a condo association dispute with a developer over signage rights on building exterior); complaints (involving Section 1983 complaints, automobile/motorcycle accidents, breach of contract claims, intentional tortious conduct, and slander); motions (to dismiss for lack of personal jurisdiction, response to 2-619 motion to dismiss, for attorneys’ fees based on quantum meruit, and in limine to exclude irrelevant and prejudicial evidence from trial); and other documents such as discovery requests and responses trust agreements, wills, asset purchase agreements, LLC operating agreements, employee handbooks, and residential real estate sale/purchase contracts.
Mr. Cohen has extensive trial experience, having handled and prepared traffic, misdemeanor, and felony criminal cases from beginning to end. In addition, he has also argued motions for directed finding and petitions to rescind summary suspension of license, as well as prepared motions to quash and suppress evidence.
Mr. Cohen has been admitted to practice law before the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Illinois Supreme Court. He is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association and the Chicago Bar Association Professional Fees Committee.
In 2008, Mr. Cohen was admitted to practice law in the State of Alabama and is currently with the Office of the Public Defender in Tuscaloosa.
